The short answer: in 2026, a cafe website in New Zealand costs anywhere from NZ$0 upfront with a NZ$45/month subscription, to NZ$499–NZ$1,500 for a one-off template build, to NZ$3,500–NZ$7,000+ for a custom agency site — plus NZ$34–68/month if you build it yourself on Wix or Squarespace. All four of those numbers are real quotes from the current NZ market. They just describe different routes to the same destination.
This guide prices every route in NZ dollars, flags the GST trap that makes Kiwi quotes hard to compare, and itemises the costs that never appear on the quote. We sell one of these routes ourselves and we'll say so plainly when we get to it — the numbers for the others are straight. (Weighing up the global picture instead? Our general cafe website cost guide covers the international platforms in more depth.)
The NZ market at a glance
Here's the whole 2026 New Zealand market in one table — what each route costs upfront, what it costs ongoing, and what your time is worth in the deal:
| Route | Upfront | Ongoing | Your time |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Rocketspark) | NZ$0 | NZ$34–68/month | 20–40 hours to build, then every update forever |
| Template studio, one-off build | NZ$499–NZ$1,500 | Hosting NZ$10–40/month + paid updates | Low — until the menu changes |
| Done-for-you subscription | NZ$0–NZ$400 | NZ$45–NZ$199/month, updates usually included | Near zero |
| Freelancer, custom | NZ$1,100–NZ$2,500 | Hosting + per-change fees | Low |
| Agency, custom | NZ$3,500–NZ$7,000+ | Care plans NZ$50–200/month | Meetings |
Route 1: DIY builders — NZ$34–68 a month, plus your weekends
Wix and Squarespace charge NZ$34–68 a month for the plan a cafe actually needs (custom domain, no adverts). Rocketspark, the NZ-founded builder, runs NZ$49–150 a month and comes with local support — a genuine point in its favour if you go this way.
The real price is your time. A first-time builder typically spends 20 to 40 hours getting from blank template to presentable, and every future menu change, seasonal hours update and photo swap stays yours to do, in an editor you use four times a year and relearn every time. Value your time at even NZ$35 an hour and the true first-year cost is NZ$1,100–NZ$1,800. That's how DIY cafe sites end up frozen in the month they were built. Our Wix vs Squarespace vs done-for-you comparison goes deeper if this is the route you're weighing.
Route 2: NZ template studios — NZ$499 to NZ$1,500 one-off
A newer breed of NZ studio advertises fixed-price template builds — "websites from $499" or "from $749 inc. GST" — typically a clean 1–5 page site delivered in a week or two. For that money you get a professional-looking result without acquiring a new hobby, and the fixed price is refreshingly honest compared with agency quoting.
Check three things before you sign. First, what hosting costs after launch — NZ$10–40 a month is normal, but it's sometimes vague until the invoice. Second, what a content change costs, because this is where one-off builds get expensive: NZ$65–165 to swap a menu is common, and a cafe menu is not a static document. Third, who owns the domain — it should be registered in your name, no exceptions. A NZ$499 build with NZ$100-a-quarter menu updates costs more over three years than most subscriptions — run the comparison in our pay-monthly vs one-off maths.
Route 3: Done-for-you subscriptions — NZ$45 to NZ$199 a month, little or nothing upfront
The subscription model bundles the build, hosting, security and updates into one flat monthly fee. In NZ the generalist services run NZ$49–NZ$199 a month, sometimes with a build fee of NZ$390+ unless you commit to twelve months — read that clause twice.
Ours is the cafe-specific version, so here's the plain disclosure: we build one-page cafe websites free, then charge NZ$45 a month once the site is live — hosting, security and all content updates included, no contract, cancel with a message, domain yours. It works because one-page cafe sites are the only thing we build. Full details on the pricing page.
The honest catch with any subscription: you're renting a service, not buying an asset, so if you stop paying, the site comes down. That's fine — NZ$45 a month for a decade still undercuts many agency builds plus their care plans — provided you own your domain and can take your content with you. Any provider who registers the domain in their own name has you hostage. The good ones answer the ownership question in one sentence.
Route 4: Freelancers and agencies — NZ$1,100 to NZ$7,000+
A NZ freelancer will build a custom cafe site for roughly NZ$1,100–NZ$2,500; established agencies start around NZ$3,500 and run well past NZ$7,000 for e-commerce. You get craft, strategy and someone accountable — real things, honestly priced at the top of the market.
The problem for a cafe is shape, not quality. Agency pricing buys more website than a cafe needs: five to ten pages, an About essay, a blog nobody will write. Agencies price by the page, so nobody in that meeting is motivated to say one page is enough — menu, hours, map, photos, phone. And the quote is only the start: hosting is extra, updates are billed per change, and twelve-month care contracts are standard. If you run a roastery with wholesale accounts or need online ordering, this route earns its keep. For a neighbourhood cafe, it's a lorry doing a bicycle's job.
The GST trap (and other NZ-specific fine print)
New Zealand quotes come in two flavours — inc. GST and exc. GST — and providers use both, which makes comparison shopping quietly treacherous. Fifteen percent is the difference between a NZ$999 quote and a NZ$1,149 invoice. Before comparing any two quotes, confirm both numbers the same way, in writing. And note the wrinkle at the small end of the market: sole traders under the NZ$60,000 turnover threshold may not charge GST at all, which can make the smallest providers legitimately cheaper.
Two more Kiwi specifics. A .co.nz or .nz domain costs about NZ$20–35 a year from any NZ registrar — whoever builds your site, the domain should be registered in your name, because domains-held-hostage is the industry's ugliest trick. And NZ hosting is worth a question: a site served from NZ or Australian data centres loads faster for your customers than one served from the US, and speed is a ranking factor Google actually measures.
The hidden costs nobody itemises
Whichever route you take, budget the full picture, not the headline number:
| Cost | Typical NZ price | Who usually forgets it |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name (.co.nz) | NZ$20–35/year, paid to the registrar | Everyone — check whose name it's in |
| Hosting | NZ$0 (bundled) to NZ$110/month | Agency clients, after year one |
| GST | 15% on top of exc. quotes | Anyone comparing quotes quoted differently |
| Photography | NZ$0 (your phone) to NZ$675 (pro half-day) | DIY builders — see our phone photography guide |
| Menu and content updates | NZ$0 (bundled) to NZ$165 per change | One-off build clients, forever |
| Your own time | 20–40 hours to build, then ongoing | Every DIY quote ever written |
Run your own numbers
Tables are averages; your cafe isn't. Put the actual quote you've been given into the calculator below — build cost, their hosting, what they charge per menu change, and how often your site really changes — and see the multi-year totals side by side. Prefer the long-form argument first? Start with pay-monthly vs one-off, then come back and plug in your numbers. If the one-off route wins on your maths, take it.
Type in the quote you’re comparing — every field is editable. All figures NZ$.
On these numbers the subscription saves NZ$2,129 over 3 years.
Red flags in any NZ quote
Some things should end a conversation regardless of price. The domain registered in their name, not yours. No physical location, named person, or company details anywhere — you're about to rely on this provider for years; you should be able to find out who they are. Twelve-month lock-ins for a simple site — a provider confident in their work doesn't need to lock the door. "SEO included" as a vague line item — for a cafe, real visibility comes from a fast site, accurate details and a well-kept Google Business Profile, not a monthly fee for fog. Vagueness about update costs — if they won't say what a menu change costs before you sign, you'll find out after.
See yours before you spend anything
The nice thing about the free-build model is that you don't have to take anyone's word for any of this — including ours. Send one photo and your Instagram link, and we'll build a free mockup of your cafe's website in 2 hours — whether you're in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or anywhere else in NZ. Compare it against any quote on this page. If a different route suits your cafe better, take it — at least you'll be comparing real things.
